  1. I found in general most Chinese not born out of overseas Chinese communities (and Hong Kong or Taiwan don’t count as overseas Chinese in this case) have a very utilitarian view towards learning. There is very little love towards reading for the sake of really learning it. I was talking with a family member the other day and he wanted his US-born son to learn simplified Chinese characters simply because it is used in the mainland and his son might encounter more mainland business or life situations in the future, ignoring the fact it would be a big jump to learn traditional Chinese characters after learning simplified characters first rather than the other way round.

When I was still at secondary school in Hong Kong close to two decades ago (which had 100% and 1 student intake when I was there), I noticed there was no one who dead seriously wanted to acquire extracurricular knowledge that would not be used on exams or coursework assessments. I guess most could care less about the lessons of Qin dynasty’s downfall other than for sitting the tests and exams. It is really tragic because to have such utilitarian view towards education makes Hong Kong the mess we see today (“plastic”).

  3. To Sam F
