The truth is out there。

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/oct/02/congress.useconomy

I second this. Go to any university town and big metro city’s upper income non-business professionals neighbourhoods and take 100 people at random, and I promise you will find 100 out of 100 people with this belief. Noam Chomsky, Stanley Hauerwas, etc.

Heck Perennial_Loser and Martin, if you dare to post what you wrote, in English, on the Western left-wing discussion forums such as democraticunderground.com, I can bet you both will be lynched by an angry mob within 5 minutes.

The same thing happens with the West’s Left as well. David Horowitz of the Commentary magazine is a conservative convert, but he started out as a 3rd generation radical Trotskyite Left. (Compared with Leung Kwok-hung, Horowitz was the real deal) and was an insider in the 1960s US student/campus leftist activism. He parted company with the Left in the 1970s and has become one of the hate figures among the US university campus leftists.

Victor Davis Hanson (a conservative Democrat in the US and a famed classics and military history academic) one pointed this hypocrisy of the Western Left a few years ago, and he sighed that these people will never wake up until the chips are well and truly down i.e. divisions of the PLA in Rome or Paris.

  9. Joel:

No need to go as deep as “underground” (now I know Weathermen Underground wasn’t named this way for nothing); HuffPo is bloody enough for me.

People like Edward Said often say Westerners are plagued with Orientalism and thus develop some sort of fear-mongering/bashing of China and other Eastern nations/cultures/etc. Just that few are aware of Orientalism going the other way which turns Westerners into…”panda-huggers” or Islam-apologists, etc.

  10. Joel:

Victor Davis Hanson…come across his columns often on RCP, but never know he’s a Dem.

Not that one should go war-war 7-24; but a tree-hugging Democratic Party which can’t even tolerate some sort of Truman or LBJ (never mind Scoop Jackson) is just too scary – unfortunately not for the average Yank or European, though.

  11. To Joel:

  12. Aw don’t go to Huffington Post – they have some of the post leftist people in America writing for them.

If you want to read something written by Westerners that refutes “reverse orientalism” I recommend Mark Steyn and David Warren (both Canadian). Their favourite discussion is on postmodern and post-colonial Western self-loathing. Steyn has even stated his hypothesis that Islamism cannot grow out of vacuum: the host is guilt-ridden Western anti-Westernism like Chomsky, and the moral certainty of Islamism is like a parasite that grows on postmodern Western weakness.

Likewise I believe contemporary Chinese feng qing fascist nationalism is also a parasite growing on Western self-loathing. Had everyone in the West been like their grandfather’s ages and worse, the gunboat diplomacy-era, feng qing can’t grow out of that soil. The feng qing uses Western self-loathing treatises to support their moral certainty claim of [their own interpretation] of Chinese culture is the way for the world, and the Western pomos, in their own relativistic way of thinking, do not dare to point out they are wrong. Sigh…

  13. To Perennial_Loser:

I quite like VDH, and I have corresponded with him personally in the past. I think people who don’t know him often assume he is a 24-7 warmonger, which is in fact very far from the whole picture. His point is that in order to protect the West’s liberty of values, force needs to be used if necessary, and strategically so that minimal blood will need to be shed over time.

Of course with the current US Democratic presidential candidate, I’m quite sure VDH etc will be anathema in the tree hugging candidate.

  14. Thanks Martin, I’m quite sure these people hadn’t really considered reality could be stranger than fiction.

Sorry that I didn’t comment this on my last post. The Western Left has a soft spot on China because (they don’t necessarily believe all of them)

    1. a lot of them still “feel” the China is still the same as Mao Zedong’s China politically wise; (i.e. leftist solidarity)
    2. China’s official name is still the People’s Republic of China, still nominally “Communist” a “worker’s and farmer’s state”; (i.e. at least it is still nominally leftist) and most importantly
    3. Geopolitically it is an enemy state of the United States – “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.

It really doesn’t matter if all else fails, just because you are against the US, that makes you a hero.

Take another example: Vietnam was often touted as another example of positive sympathy by the Western Left in the 1980s and early 1990s. After the US with Bill Clinton recognized Communist Vietnamese government in 1995 and the Communist Vietnamese have started friendly overtures to the US, all the praises from the US Left evaporated overnight, and it is now common to see criticism of Vietnamese human rights records in Berkeley of all places.

  16. Joel:

A long time ago I used to go to HuffPo a bit…to test my endurance against the follies of hard-core leftist “Gweilos” (despite me being slightly to the left on economics and green issues). Anyway that’s history in the dustbin…haha.

I also come across the names Steyn and Warren often on RCP…while I’m not that much into the laissez-faire stuff of the right’s package, both are truly admirable in their defense of freedom of speech and the very necessary (and urgent) warning against Western self-loath. In short, it always makes me wonder why Western leftists can side with their most dreadful enemies in theory – say, Islam fundamentalists – and leaves it to their real world enemy (the right) to take up arms and defend the largely secular Western way of life. And the few like Oriana Fallaci, Christopher Hitchens and even Joe Lieberman – who are rock-solid liberals for >90% of the time – got trashed by their comrades for that 10% “heresy”…that makes me puke.

Actually that Western self-loathing thing did start out as a very positive trait among their people (and something I find totally AWOL in Chinese) – the ability to look back and rethink. Yet now it seems they are overdoing it and…now every rivalling party are taking advantage of that. So we now have Londonistan, Chinese feng qings, reviving Russian imperialists…etc. All justifying themselves with the self-condemnations of the average European (of course, together with novel stuff like “multi-culturalism” and so forth). It really feels like getting stung by 10,000 bees seeing the West – and life as we know – slowly destroyed by that very positive trait of Westerners which makes them standing out a bit so far. Good grief…

  17. Joel:

As for VDH…can’t imagine how painful it is for him to stay under the Dem tent. Again, the Western left leaves me a lot to wonder – they really seem to be living a some La-la-land, with no sense of self-defense…

If it’s some sort of Gephardt, or even Edwards, the Dem candidate may look acceptable for me…but the one we have now only reminds me of the tree-hugging, crack-smoking ’60s and ’70s. To be honest, be there “change” or “no change” this Obama guy is going to screw up big time but…with more luck than Carter he will be lauded as the new Messiah of Peace around the world. Even the likes of “our Great Motherland” and its little “Most Truthful Friend” on Korean Peninsula will do so, albeit smugly.

  18. Joel:

Agree with you regarding the Western Left’s soft spot for China; the older ones are more likely under the (1) and (2) categories, while (3) is most widely shared by most in that camp.

And the damn thing is they have friends on the right (despite ideological differences) to help with the panda-hugging:

    (a) the big biz – no need to elaborate why;

    (b) starry-eyed and well-wishing libertarians/globalists/Chicago Boys/etc. who REALLY believes in the spell “with economic freedom/development comes democracy and liberty”…and appreciates phenomena they see like hyper-competition (in education and labour sectors) and high efficency (when the govt acts biz-friendly – despite acting in a “big govt” manner);

    (c) the most typical “China Hands” who, as described by 鍾祖康 in 《來生不做中國人》, got flattered and pampered so much by Chinese (and with a dose of reverse Orientalism) that they truly and wholeheartedly believe everything’s fine in China.

So just like James Mann said in his most recent book, doubters of China are virtually bombarded by all sides and have little voice now. But it isn’t just the US; it’s a worldwide phenomenon. And this is the most worrying part.
